Description
Tahiti is separated from its sister island, Moorea, by ten miles of water known as the Sea Of The Moon. This sketch was done at the Intercontinental Resort outside Papeete, Tahiti, looking across the water to Moorea. A feast for the eyes up close, Moorea is just as lovely from a distance. You can watch the sun light up the side hills in the morning and set behind Mount Rotui in the evening. A Tahitian legend tells the story of the notch in the hills: http://aruffo.tripod.com/folklore.html

I have just ordered this in quite a large size because both my husband and I gasped upon seeing it. In 1990 we visited the magnificent islands of French Polynesia and they are never far from our hearts. But the Sea of the Moon is especially important to us because during our 2 weeks there we cruised on the Wind Song for a week. Much later, after a terrible fire onboard, she was sunk in the Sea of the Moon ... waters we once gazed across to Moorea from our Tahiti hotel even before we had sailed those waters. Because our beautiful ship lays at rest there, this beautiful depiction of one of the most glorious places on earth will grace our living room wall forever. Thank you, Pat Katz ... you have an ardent new fan.

Heather. Thanks so much for sharing the story behind your purchase. It means so much to me to hear how meaningful this image is to you. My husband and I have enjoyed many cruises over the years - but none more than our 3 week cruise that started in French Polynesia and ended in San Francisco. I'm sorry to hear of the fate of the Wind Song. And I hope this painting brings many happy memories of the experience you shared together in and around the Sea of the Moon. Warmest Wishes, Patricia
